Leadership, improvement, differences
highlight keynotes at Summer Institute
Three
national acclaimed presenters will highlight the keynote
sessions at this
year’s Principals’ Partnership Summer Leadership
Institute, discussing principal leadership, making schools
great, and recognizing and celebrating differences in people.
The 7th annual Institute, supported by the Union Pacific
Foundation, is expected to draw more than 750 principals
from 21 states. It is scheduled from July 14-17. Partnership
members are urged to register at their earliest convenience.
Dr. Rick DuFour, a former teacher, high school principal
and superintendent, speaks at the Tuesday keynote session
on “Managers Do Things Right; Leaders Do the Right
Things.” He will outline the nature of principal leadership,
suggest essential leadership steps principals must take,
and recommend specific, practical strategies for principal
leadership.
In his 34 years in public education, DuFour has developed
a reputation as an exceptional leader. He was principal of
Adlai Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, IL, when the
U.S. Department of Education called that school “the
most recognized and celebrated school in America.” He
is the author of eight books and more than 60 professional
articles, and was the lead consultant and author for ASCD’s
seven-part video series on the principalship.
Wednesday morning Dr. Mike Schmoker will headline the keynote
session, discussing “THE OPPORTUNITY: From ‘Brutal
Facts’ to the Best Schools We’ve Ever Had.” He’ll
outline the immense, unprecedented opportunity for acting
on just a few simple structures, elements and actions that
will impact teaching and achievement powerfully--and immediately—for
every student.
A former central office administrator, middle and high school
English teacher and football coach, Schmoker has written
four books and numerous articles which have appeared in Educational
Leadership, Phi Delta Kappan, Education Week, and TIME magazine.
His most recent book is the bestselling Results Now: How
We Can Achieve Unprecedented Results in Teaching and Learning.
One of the Institute’s most popular speakers, Dr. Dudley
E. Flood, returns Thursday to deliver the third keynote address.
Speaking on “Different Doesn’t Mean Deficient,” Flood
will outline a process to recognize, further understand,
and better appreciate our own culture and cultures other
than our own.
Flood served the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction
for 21 years, retiring after working as associate state
superintendent. A former school principal and high school
teacher, he also
was executive director of the North Carolina Association
of School Administrators.
